I recently discussed the pros and cons of working in a square composition, and the results of my labor are above. Shortly before I wrote that post I had come to the conclusion that the “solution” to the particular troubles of composing this work would be solved by reorienting the whole panel. This was in addition to the useful studio meditation of releasing one’s expectations for any given piece. An idea can bring you into a work and an idea can help you find your way to completion. But somewhere between those two points it’s best to get a little lost.
